Isaac 30 month update

Our little 30 month old continues to keep us busy and entertained! He is really wanting his independence. First of all, he wants to go to the bathroom by himself, which I think is awesome! However, he cannot be trusted in the bathroom by himself because he likes to unroll all the toilet paper. He always wants his tennis shoes on, and he wants to put them on himself now. He says "I do it." It definitely helps that they are Velcro. Sometimes he will put them on the wrong foot on purpose, and say "like this mommy," knowing that he has them on backwards (you can tell by the mischievous grin).

Isaac, like any 2 year old, loves attention. He is constantly saying "watch this mommy" or "do this mommy." He loves to be imitated! In the car, he likes to click his tongue to the roof of his mouth. Then I will join in, and he just cracks up laughing. He thinks it is so funny!

He is kind of going through a little bossy phase. He definitely desires to be in charge. One of the hardest challenges right now continues to be discipline; although, I think he is starting to realize that he should listen to his parents and authority figures. He tends to misbehave most when he is tired, especially on days he goes to daycare. He will get silly and say words over and over again, like "chicken" and "poop" and just think it is hilarious! I know boys of all ages think poop talk is funny, but he is going to have to learn that he cannot say that word. Someone may ask his name or age, and he sometimes responds with "poopy." This has got to change, and soon. It is a work in progress.

Isaac has been a little extra fussy in the mornings lately. It could partly be due to the fact that he is just not sleeping well. He is waking up a lot during the night. He is always asking for his water or chapstick during the night. He has a "thing" for chapstick. He even wants to sleep with it. However, he has lost his chapstick holding privileges because he tends to put the lid in his mouth and run around. He has started to sleep some with his stuffed animals, well, the puppies Sophie and Cookie mostly. Isaac does not tend to play with stuffed animals much, but recently he has liked taking his daddy's Boo Boo Bear (from Adam's childhood), and will cover it up and say "night-night." It is really sweet.

Isaac enjoys watching videos (however, we try to limit this). He really likes Dora the Explorer, Thomas the Train, Barney, and Big Bird. These are the videos he always request. He watches Dora and Thomas the Train on our phones, and the other two on his little DVD player. He would watch the Barney Christmas video over and over if we would allow it. He also likes building towers with blocks, banging on his drum, playing with his little plastic toy frogs, playing with his baseball bats (although this is sometimes dangerous indoors), and working puzzles. He also loves to put boxes or containers on his head. He wears them around and says "look at my hat." He really loves pushing his Tonka truck around too. It was so funny....one day I picked him up from daycare, and he was pushing a truck. Because he is thin, his pants are slightly big in the waist in order for them to fit properly in length. Well, I walked in the daycare, and there was Isaac bent over pushing a truck with one hand and reaching down to his ankles to pull his britches up with the other. His pants just kept falling down. I felt so bad because I had not realized that his pants were so large. All day long, I am sure he wrestled with keeping his pants up. Poor little fella!

Isaac is very observant. Recently he has liked to point out similarities between him and others. For instance, he says "mommy and Isaac have brown eyes," "Dora has brown eyes like us," "we both have red shirts," or "daddy has wildcat shirt on too." A lot of times if he and Adam have something in common or are doing something together, he will refer to them as "two boys." He will say "two boys are on the bed." When in the car driving, he will always notice when there is smoke. He gets real excited and says "look, there's smoke." Another thing he always points out is when he sees a WKU or UK shirt on someone. He wants to wear his Hilltopper or Wildcat shirts every day possible. Isaac also picks up on what other people say. One day leaving daycare, Isaac heard his buddy Dhavid say "frio," referring to the fact that it was cold outside. Isaac immediately started saying frio as he laughed. Then said "adios Dhavid." I hope he will pick up a little Spanish from his buddy Dhavid!

We went to St. Louis this month to visit Aunt Stephanie and Uncle Eric. While there, we stayed in a hotel, so Isaac got to go swimming with Grandad. He seems to really enjoy the water. With a hotel room being small, we had to be creative with our entertainment. I bought Isaac an Elmo hooded towel, and he played with that a lot. He would put the towel on his head and say "where's Isaac?" He also likes to close his eyes and say "where's Isaac?" It amazes me how peek-a-boo is so entertaining, and how he thinks he is invisible when he just closes his eyes. It's so cute!

Isaac and I got to go sledding this month too! He really loved being out in the snow and playing in it, especially throwing snow balls. He was actually a little hesitant this year with the sledding. He seemed to liked sledding a little more last year. Nevertheless, we had a great time playing together outside in the the beautiful snow!

Isaac is a smart little fella. He is really good with colors, shapes, and counting. He seems to express himself well, but it is interesting to see his interpretation of language. Instead of saying I fell, he may say "I falled." He has the right concept, but just has not figured out all those irregular verbs yet. He tends to get the adjectives dry and clean mixed up. Even those these two words at times can be used interchangeably, I do not think he totally understands their meanings. He will say something to describe himself, but leaves out the verb. He says "I tall" or "I hungry," leaving out the word "am." However, if I tell him "I am taller" he replies, "no, I am." One of my favorite phrases he says is "I eat my food all gone." He also has difficulty saying words that start with the letter l. He says "wuv you" instead of "love you." It is just so interesting hearing his language skills develop, and it amazes me even more on his comprehension. It feels like he understands the majority of what we tell him.

Isaac had his first informal (pretend) eye exam from his daddy and his first haircut at an actual salon this month. Usually his daddy cuts his hair, but we had to break down and get one done at the mall this time, since Adam's work schedule has picked up. The lady who cut his hair gave him a sucker, but told him he could not eat it until after the haircut. He did great! He was still, cooperative, quiet, and just held his unwrapped sucker in his hand the entire time. After his haircut, not only did he get to eat his sucker, but he got to ride the carousel. Since he loves to pretend that he is a tiger, he found one tiger on the carousel, and that's the one he choose to ride. He was so excited about the tiger!

Isaac does not quite understand the concept of having a brother yet. Although, he has learned that mommy has a baby boy in her bellly. When people ask him if he is having a brother or sister, I have to rephrase it for him. I will ask "Isaac, is mommy having a baby girl or baby boy?" He smiles and says "baby boy." Even though he does not get it yet, I am sure he will with time.

The little man has become obcessed with suckers and smarties. As soon as I pick him up from daycare, he immediately runs to his folder for me to get his treat down. I do not like for him to have a lot of sweets, and this makes it difficult because he knows the treat is there and for him. He continues to be a fairly picky eater. He does not like vegetables except for potatoes, and rarely eats fruits these days. That is why I am not a big fan of letting him have sweets. If he only knew about fruits, he would think they are sweet and yummy. A food he has recently decided that he likes is waffles. The boy definitely loves his carbs. He gets that from both his mommy and daddy.

Isaac is really in tune with his body, so if something hurts or if he has a boo-boo, he makes sure he tells us. Anytime he bumps his head, he says "I hurt my noggin." Sometimes he will say, "My belly hurts. I need to go to the doctor." Bless his heart, he thinks he always needs to go to the doctor. Isaac's teacher said he probably picked this up from a classmate at school who always says she needs to go to the hospital.

Probably the funniest thing Isaac said this month occurred when we were on our way to church. We were going to pick up Carrie on a Wednesday night, and Isaac said "all my friends are going to be there." The he started naming them....Carrie, Adam Reed, Chris, Bruce, Kim, etc. It was so funny because all of the people he named are in their mid 20's-30's.

It has been a great month. I just cannot believe how fast my little Bopper is growing up. I love him so much!

Christmas 2010

We had a wonderful Christmas, celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ!

Isaac was a part of two Christmas programs, one at his daycare and one at Grandad and Mimi's church. He was an angel in the church program, and cooperated very well. Isaac also got to attend a Christmas program at our local church. He was really interested in watching the actors, singing, and dancing. However, his favorite part was the little girl angel who appeared in the play. After her part was over, he repetitively said "I want to see the angel again." We tried to use these plays, books, and the manager scene to help Isaac understand that the true meaning of Christmas was all about Jesus, and His birth, not us. When asked who's birthday it was, Isaac would say Jesus. Even though he doesn't understand it all; at least it's a start in his understanding about Jesus.

We were able to spend some time with both families this year, which was great! We had a delicious Christmas meal and had lots of fun with our families. The Vandenbrinks were able to join us this year, so that made it even more special! John, Rebecca, and Mary were also able to come in for Christmas. Since Isaac did not see them at Thanksgiving, that was fun too! Of course, Isaac received a ton of gifts and loved every minute of it. He loved all the attention, gifts/toys, and seeing the family. He jumped up and down and said "presents!"He loved opening gifts and also enjoyed helping to open other people's gifts. He especially loves his grandparents! Oh course, he is not spoiled at all!

There were a couple big announcements made in my family this Christmas. Aunt Jane announced that she was going to be a grandmother, by showing us all some onesies that John and Rebecca gave her for Christmas! How exciting! Since we were on the topic, my Mom lifted up Isaac's shirt, to expose a short-sleeve shirt that said Big Brother Isaac! Our baby and the Orton baby will only be about a month apart. With three new babies (Baby Whitley, Coats, and Orton) next year at Christmas, it will be interesting. Debbie announced the news to the Wallace extended family right before we ate our Christmas meal! We will have two new babies (since Greg and Mandy are due in March) in their family next year. It's awesome to see our family grow!

One of the most special parts about this year's Christmas was singing at Gran's (Dot's house). She was unable to get out to join us for our meal, so we all piled in her house and sang her Christmas carols. It was a very special time for our family!

This Christmas was a white one, and the snow was beautiful! Snow covered scenery always reminds me of how great God is, and there was no better time to witness God's beauty than Christmas! How thankful I am that He sent His Son into the world, to live a perfect life, and die on the cross for my sins as a substitute for what I deserve....death! Oh, how He loves each of us! Happy Birthday Jesus, and thank you!
