Isaac's 1st trip to the dentist

Isaac looking a little unsure of about what is about to happen.

Isaac getting his teeth cleaned...in the big boy chair.

Isaac recently went to the dentist for the first time (at almost 20 months of age). While in the waiting area, he seemed content at first. Then after watching many people go in and out of the door to go back to the dentist, every chance he could, he'd try to open the door, so he could sneak in the back and see what was going on. Once he went back, he without a fight, allowed me to put him up in the dental chair. The hygienist let him feel the electric toothbrush on his finger so he'd know what to expect. He was very cooperative as the dental hygienist cleaned his teeth...or at least at first. The last couple minutes of cleaning, she had to use a regular toothbrush because he started crying. Once the cleaning was over, he seemed fine. The dentist soon after checked his teeth, and Isaac was cooperative and still, as he sat in the chair. The dentist said everything looked good, and encouraged me to continue brushing his teeth at least twice a day and flossing once at night. He stated that Isaac's teeth were pretty crowded for baby teeth and to start a savings account for braces that Isaac will need in the future. Well, I guess that was coming, since Adam and I both had braces. Isaac got a little bag of goodies (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc), and his first trip to the dentist was finished. I was very proud of Isaac's big boy behavior. He was overall cooperative, and his aunt Stephanie (who is a pediatric dentist) says that it's rare 1 year-olds even sit in the dental chair. Good job little man!!!

Isaac is 19 months old and his little personality is continuing to show. He is doing and saying something new everyday. It is such a joy to watch him grow and develop. He keeps me on my toes as I am never sure what he will do or say next. He definitely has a mind of his own and knows what he wants and does not want. For example, when I am trying to get him to eat, if he does not want a particular food, he just covers his face with his hands and shakes his head "no." When he is hungry, he will just go into the kitchen, pull out the chair at the the table, and climb up into his seat (that is attached to the table). If I am trying to give him medicine or brush his teeth when he does not want me to, he will just put all his fingers in his mouth (although I have to admit, he does a very good job usually of letting me give him medicine and brush his teeth).

Once again we have battled with ear infections this month. Poor guy, I hate for him to be on antibiotics all the time. We have recently noticed that he has a little wart on his pinkie. Isaac knows that it is not something that has always been there, so he tends to pick at it or bite it. He says "hand hurt." Isaac has also started having some dry skin issues on his cheeks. The right cheek tends to look raw at times. Hopefully it's nothing Cetaphil, lotion, and a humidifier won't help. Little man got bit for the first time this month by another little boy at preschool. He had a small open sore on his upper arm, but seems to be healing well. Isaac is definitely getting taller, and we are thankful he is growing! We are continually amazed with how strong he is for such a little fella. He can hang from monkey bars by himself, which is impressive at this age. He loves going to the park, and has mastered the tallest slide (which is about 15 feet high).

My favorite thing Isaac says is "oh mommy" and "oh daddy." You just have to hear him say it to understand how incredibly sweet he sounds when he says it! Another favorite Isaac quote is "bye-bye doggie," "bye-bye cat," "bye-bye baby," etc. He has to say bye-bye to everything. It is really cute. Some of Isaac's favorite words/interests this month are: Nanny (when he sees a motorcycle he thinks of daddy who he still calls Nanny), pig, tow (for cow), dog, tat (for cat), shoes, and bus. Isaac absolutely loves school buses. On the way to daycare in the mornings, we point out every school bus we see, and Isaac yells "bus, bus." Isaac still loves shoes. He wants his shoes on during every hour he is awake. First thing in the morning he says "shoes on." He also loves to put on his little frog rain boots. He can slip the boots on independently, and will just play with them on for hours. Isaac still has an obsession with dogs, and is becoming more comfortable around them. When we go to the Reed's house, Isaac lets Oliver and Millie lick his hand and his tongue (which is disgusting).

Isaac likes to be a little helper. He will help me bring in the groceries from the garage, help me dust, and help me sort laundry and put laundry into the dryer. He likes to do whatever we are doing. One night his daddy was sitting in the living room chair with his feet propped up, so Isaac decided to prop up his feet like his daddy. It was hilarious! Isaac also likes to help his daddy work on projects in the garage. Isaac has an interests in the tools. However, he usually just ends up pushing around his stroller, which he loves to do! Isaac and Daddy have another fun thing they do together. Isaac will stand on the fireplace. He then puts both hands with his pointer fingers out and points them quickly to his Daddy (a technique he gets from his Uncle Eric, aka Shooter McWhitley). Then he runs as fast as he can to Adam, and Adam throws him up high in the chair. Isaac of course says "more, more" and makes his way back to the fireplace so he can repeat the process. He just giggles the whole time!

Isaac enjoys music. Some new songs he likes are: "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands," "Wheels on the Bus," and "Bingo." The first song on a CD in our car is "Bingo." As soon as that song is over and the next one starts, Isaac immediately said "dog, dog," because he wants to play "Bingo" again. We sometimes hear that song 4-5 times on our way to his preschool. Once we pull into his school's parking lot, Isaac immediately says "Tay" who is one of his school buddies. As soon as he walks into the classroom, he gives Tay a hug. Isaac's other buddy is Dhavid. I have been told that they will stand at the 1/2 door with just their heads peeping over and shake their heads to make their hair flop around. Now if I just ask Isaac, "what do you and Dhavid do at school?" he just flops his hair and smiles real big!

One of my favorite things Isaac has starting doing this month is recognizing the Bible. He says "Mommy's Bible." He is able to distinguish it from other books. I pray someday he realizes his own need for the Lord's Word and the significance of the Bible. When we sing, "the B-I-B-L-E," he screams "Bible" at the end.

Isaac is so much fun, and such a blessing to us. We are privileged to have him as our son!

Isaac's 1st big snow!!!

It snowed last year when Isaac was little, but not enough to really get out and play in it. This year (2010), we had a chance to put on our gloves, boots, and coats, and get out in the snow. The first snow Isaac got to experience was while he was 17 months old. We got him bundled up and took out a couple toys for him to play with in the snow, but he just was not that interested. It was not that he did not like it, he just did not what to think about it. He would put his boot down real slow with each step. He was very indifferent towards the snow.
Then we had a larger snow once he was 18 months old. This time we were more prepared. He purchased a sled, which was definitely worth it! We found a slope across the street from our house. I would get a little run, and then jump on the sled with Isaac as we went down the hill. Isaac would just giggle out loud once the sled stopped at the bottom of the hill. He loved it, and would say "more, more" as he used his baby sign language. Once Isaac started to really enjoy it, I then pushed him down by himself. He loved it, and had a great time!!!

Isaac loves getting into containers such as the laundry basket and his tent.

This is what Isaac likes to do while mommy is cooking. Not sure if it was this particular day, but he had a can fall on his toe, which caused him to have a black toenail. I should have known better. Now, can stacking is off limits.

Isaac seems to be getting so much more like a big boy. He is really developing in all areas, mentally, physically, socially, etc. He really likes to learn and do new things. He enjoys looking at books and picking out the objects he recognizes. When he sees something he doesn't recognize he says "what's that?" I never thought I'd be able to say this, but Isaac has not been crying at daycare when I drop him off in the mornings. What a relief!!!

Isaac is saying so many more words and phrases now; although, his speech is not always perfectly clear. For example, he loves to say cow, but it comes out as "tow." Words that start with c's are pronounced with t's. So cat, cow, couch are pronounced as tat, tow, and touch. He still likes to call his daddy, "nanny." In the mornings he jumps in bed with daddy and says "nanny, tot cards." His daddy has a program called tot cards on his i phone and Isaac loves it! He overheard his daddy talking about taxes one day, and ever since then, he says the word taxes on command and then smiles real big. There are so many words we try to get him to say, but the one word he says over and over on command is taxes...I'm sure his Uncle Steve will be proud. Another funny thing Isaac is doing is when you ask him how old he is, he throws up his pointer finger as says confidently "TWO." I have no idea why he thinks he is two. We have discussed this with him many times that he is just one, but he seems to think he is two. Also, any time I start to count 1, 2, 3...he just says two. I will say "Isaac, let's count the pigs on the page," and he says "two, two." It's so funny! Other words Isaac has started to say are Bible and Jesus. Isaac can pick out which book is the Bible. He is also very consistent with praying with us. He always puts down his eating utensil or toy, stops whatever he's doing, folds his hands, and joins us to pray. It is my prayer that he will do this independently in the future because he wants to talk to God himself and have a relationship with Him.

Isaac enjoys playing with puzzles, dancing, and doing actions to songs (like Itsy Bitzy Spider, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands, Wheels on the Bus, This Little Light of Mine). He loves Ring around the Roses, and always says "more, more" as he uses sign language for "more." He is very active. I have a hard time catching him now because he is pretty fast when he runs. He recently discovered that he can jump (clearing both feet from the ground), and thinks it's fun to do! He loves being active. Isaac went to an indoor playground, called Hopscotch, with his buddy Austin, and had a blast. They played on climbing equipment, slides, blowup jumping toys, and a large playhouse. Isaac and Austin seemed to really enjoy the vacuum cleaner (that looked like a miniature version of a real one that was in the playhouse) and the kitchen in the playhouse.

Isaac definitely has an interest in balls. Every time he sees a basketball or football game on TV, he yells out "ball" as he points up to the screen. He loves playing with his basketball goal and his small hand-sized balls. He actually has pretty good aim when he throws his little balls to us. Isaac attended his first WKU basketball game this month. I have to admit, Isaac was more interested in Big Red, the mascot, than the actual game. His little eyes followed Big Red, as he moved around the arena, the entire game. Big Red even came to our seat to play with Isaac. He was sitting in his grandad's lap, and quickly wanted to be with his Mommy (because Grandad was a little too close to Big Red). He really likes Big Red as long as he is not too close to him. He has also been to several Drakes Creek Middle School basketball games, to watch his cousin Adam coach. Isaac yells ball and points down to the floor as soon as we arrive. He is always able to pick out Coach Adam too. Coach Adam Reed taught him how to get in triple threat position as he holds a basketball. Now Isaac is ready to shoot, pass, or dribble!

Isaac finished up his final story hour sessions at the library this month. He is too old to continue attending. There is a class for his age group, but it's on a day when both of us work. Maybe we will get to resume story hour in the future. Overall, Isaac seemed to enjoy story hour. He liked the stories, rhymes, play time, and being around other kids. We did occasionally have some discipline problems with him during his time at the library, such as pulling out little girls hair bows and pinching cheeks (especially kids smaller than him).

Here are some other interests Isaac has had this month: coloring, doing crafts, playing with snaps/buckles on clothing, copying head movements of others (such as nodding yes with a very slow movement), playing with his mommy's hair and moles, pushing around trucks, getting into the tupperware drawer, stacking cans from the pantry, and getting in his mommy and daddy's shoes. I think walking around in our shoes is his favorite hobby! He has also really started to enjoy eating peanut butter....on bananas, sandwiches, and crackers. I am glad to have another source of protein that he will actually eat.

Some new things for Isaac this month are: getting his canine teeth (which has been painful for him at times), kissing us on the cheek more (especially in the mornings when he first wakes up), saying "cheese" when he's getting his picture taken, playing in the snow (which he absolutely loved), and pooping in the potty (which only happened once and was forced as he was placed on the potty right as he was pooping). He has also learned to work his portable DVD player with only minimal help from me. He loves watching his Baby Einstein and Your Baby Can Read videos as he sits in his little rocking chair. It's so fun to watch him because he sits with perfect posture in the rocker.

This has been a great month! We are so excited that Isaac is a healthy boy and developing as he should be. We are so thankful for our little blessing!
